Reviewing the NBC Upfront: Seriously Musical

Toward that end, he kicked things off with a conversation about NBC’s new hit and “rare gift from God,” The Voice. Greenblatt explained why the network was holding it until spring — so they could figure out a format that has it go for longer than ten weeks and grow it into a reliable, long-term blockbuster. He then showed a clip reel for The Voice that was nothing short of masterful: a really excellent cut, and also, lordy, what a boon this whole thing has been to Christina Aguilera, whose face gets pride of place in all the promotional materials, and thus gets promoted every time the show does. After the video, Greenblatt was sure to mention mid-season show Smash, lest anyone mistake its 2012 premiere date for anything less than total network confidence.

Greenblatt then did a walk-through of the schedule, night by night. The Sing-Off, which will keep The Voice’s spot warm for it on Monday nights, would have looked better had it not aired right after The Voice’s promo, which was a lot more substantial.

And now the last clip of the upfront! And, not going to lie, Smash, a Greenblatt favorite, looks great. Debra Messing plays a producer who is putting together a musical based on Marilyn Monroe, and she and her director, producer (Anjelica Huston), and writer are auditioning Marilyns. One of them is played by Katharine McPhee, who is clearly the star of the show, Messing and Huston’s bigger names aside. McPhee sings Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful” (NBC: Now promoting Christina Aguilera on all platforms!), and it’s great.

To end the show, Greenblatt wants to leave us with three thoughts: “We know we have to rebuild this network.” There will be no “scrimping” at the margins; NBC is going to pay up. And finally, “We know this is all going to take time.” Until then, though, NBC has The Voice and Christina Aguilera, who comes out to sing. She performs with the Roots and some backup singers. People are leaving in earnest now, but, it. is. not. over. Aguilera calls out Cee Lo. He sings “Crazy.” And it’s still not over! Marianne Gambelli comes back out, but NBC has already made its point: NBC, the musical channel, with a solid development slate, is going to be a serious player again. Seriously.

I really feel like the public has been too hard on Christina Aguilera this past year. Do you think it’s a case of society wanting to tear someone down only to build them back up because the public loves a comeback story?

Christina’s always had the bad rap. So, it’s not like this is happening all of a sudden… she’s always had it. That’s something between Christina, her fans, the public, and the energy of the world. That’s something only Christina and the energy can figure out what’s going on there. But, as far as I’ve known her, everybody’s always given her a hard time. She’s a different little bird. You know, she’s not really out a lot and when she does go out, people are gonna grab things. Like, is she running around as much as Britney Spears was a few years ago? No, she’s isn’t. But, when they catch her they catch her in whatever state she is in. I don’t know why the press is so hard on her right now. I think Christina’s awesome and a very talented person. She definitely doesn’t care — and that is a fact. You know how some people say “I don’t care” and they really do? I can tell you that Christina really doesn’t care…. because she learned very early on that critics are critics, people will say whatever they want and it’s up to her to decide what is the truth and what is not. She stands true to what she knows.

Like, she told me “I know this Bionic record is not going to be a big record because I’m gonna try and do some different things and I don’t know what’s gonna happen but this is what I wanna do…” She knew that before she recorded one thing. She knew that about Back to Basics, too. Her record company came to her and said “you’re gonna sell way more many records if you make this a single album. Let’s get rid of the double record.” And she said, “No, this is how I hear it. I hear one record being like this and the other record being like this.” Everybody warned her that it’s not going to sell as much but she didn’t care because she comes up with creative ideas and stands behind them as an artist. It’s not all about selling a bazillion records to her. She just wants to be able to stand behind it. In the end she did say to me, “Maybe I did release the Bionic record too soon. Oh well. Now, I wanna make a rock record!” I was like “Oh, God!” She’s gonna take everybody for a ride. So, ultimately, why she gets put down I don’t know. You’ll never know, I’ll never know, only Christina will ever figure that out and get the answer.

Patti Labelle defends Christina

Music legend Patti Labelle rushed to the defense of Christina Aguilera after that botched Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl.

“Christina went through something there. That’s one of the best singers in the world, for her to mess up a lyric, don’t hold it against her,” says Labelle.

In songwriting, it’s all about the “hook”—that catchy combination of music, melody and lyric that sticks in your head. The hook is the message we want to leave you with. It’s what we’re selling.

The trick is to find a hook that expresses a universal theme in a way that hasn’t been done yet. I found myself facing that challenge with “Soar,” a song that my songwriting partner Rob Hoffman and I produced and co-wrote with Christina Aguilera.

Christina wasn’t given the opportunity to write any of her own material on her first album. For her second album—”Stripped,” which came out in 2002—she chose to break out of the pop-princess mold and show the world the artist behind the voice. She arrived at our studio with two bulging tote bags of journals. A hit album, world tour, first love, heartbreak, betrayal—all had been poured into those journals. It was time to get it out.

Christina had received countless letters from young fans, particularly women, lamenting the pressure they felt to conform, to please others. Having faced her own struggles with self-acceptance, she asked us to help her to write a song with a message to her fans: “Be yourself and follow your dreams, no matter what anyone else thinks.”

Rob went to work on the music. If you listen to the instrumental part of the song, you get a sense of the story: scene-setting in the verse, tension building in the pre-chorus, a payoff in the chorus, a new twist in the bridge and a climactic finale. Next, Rob looped the instrumental track while Christina and I sang along, trying out ideas until we had a melody that reflected the struggle to “be yourself.”

Before we began the process of fitting words and phrases into rhyme and melody structure, Christina and I brainstormed, discussed shared experiences and mined nuggets from her journal entries. I summarized from my notes: “We all have the tendency to try to please, to be accepted, so we bend when they want us to change. But after we give up and give in, we realize that it wasn’t worth it. We have to let ourselves be.”

A strong opening line is crucial. It should draw listeners into the story and lead them to the chorus. How does it feel to be pressured to be someone you’re not? Like being pulled in every direction. I suggested:

When you’re pushed and you’re pulled, baby can you hold on?

When they tell you to change, can you stand your ground and stay strong?

When we co-write songs, we edit each other as we go along. The lyrics need to sing well and sound like natural conversation, so Christina is constantly tweaking and adjusting words as she sings them with the track, even as we’re recording the final vocals. She improved my lines by adding action and imagery:

When they push, when they pull, tell me can you hold on?

When they say you should change, can you lift your head high and stay strong?

The hook was frustratingly slow in revealing itself. We considered and rejected “Do Your Thing” and “The World Is Yours.” As part of my research, I read teen magazines to get into the heads of Christina’s audience. I came across an article encouraging young women not to bow to peer pressure, and I wrote down: “Be like an eagle. Eagles fly alone, not part of a flock. They aren’t discouraged by people who question what they’re doing.” This idea gave me the first two lines of our chorus.

We continued with the chorus lyrics and had an “aha” moment when I suggested the line “What are you waiting for?” We knew it would tug at anyone who feels they’re not living to their full potential. It was also a perfect setup for our hook line, the missing piece.

CHORUS

Don’t be scared to fly alone

Find a path that is your own

Love will open every door

It’s in your hands. The world is yours

Don’t hold back and always know

All the answers will unfold

So whatcha waitin for…?

Here’s where we needed that missing hook line, whose last word would rhyme with “for.”

I opened up the rhyming dictionary for ideas and jokingly proposed “sore.” Wait a minute: “soar!” Our eagle metaphor! Let’s see: “Believe you can soar”? “Be yourself and soar”? And at last: “Spread your wings and soar!”

And so she did. “Stripped” sold over 10 million albums and won Christina a Grammy and four nominations. “Soar” was featured in movies such as “The Pursuit of Happiness,” accompanying tales of characters who beat seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

So whatcha waitin for?

Christina is in Hawaii with Tricky Stewart

Christina Aguilera jetted off to Hawaii today, just one day after announcing her divorce from Jordan Bratman.

According to Life & Style, Aguilera decided to get out of town for a few days and will be staying at the luxurious Edition, Ian Schrager’s new hotel in Waikiki.

“She wanted to get away,” a source tells Life & Style.

“Christina landed late last and is traveling with her producer, Tricky Stewart,” says the source. “She has a packed weekend ahead of her, including yoga, surfing lessons, hikes, lunches, VIP dinners and cocktail parties.”

This comes just days after Christina announced she was splitting up from her husband. She was last seen in public taking Max, her son with Jordan, pumpkin-picking in West Hollywood yesterday.

No word on whether Max is accompanying his mother on her vacation. We can totally understand why she’d want to get out of town—paparazzi have been all over her the last few days.

This will probably be the last time Christina can relax for awhile—Burlesque comes out on November 16 and we’re sure she has a ton of promoting to do for it!

US: And finally — what about her fellow pop diva, Christina Aguilera?

CK: Christina and I are actually the most alike as people. We both have sarcastic, dirty joke-minded personalities, so we clicked right away. In the songs we did, anywhere we could sneak a little curse word or some little sexual innuendo, it’s in there because that’s how we thought. And she has a really cool home studio called “Red Lips.” There’s no natural light coming in, the walls are all red and black…

US: Sounds like a vampire’s dream!

CK: That’s another thing — she loves vampires too! I’m still trying to convince her to watch True Blood. She’s just been too busy!

US: How did you discover your mutual fascination with vampires?

CK: I don’t even know how the conversation came up! I’m sure I was raving about True Blood. She likes the really dark stuff, but she’s been really busy juggling the movie and the album and, of course, she’s a mother and has all this other stuff going on in her life. Having the time to sit down on a Sunday night to watch HBO or even probably catch up on it on TiVo or whatever… I’m gonna get her there because I know she’ll like it. Anything with sex and vampires — you can’t go wrong!

US: Does she hold her son Max or anything while she’s singing?
CK: Well, she can’t hold him while she’s singing because it has to be completely silent and she has to obviously stand up properly and sing. But he’s definitely been in the room and watched her and comes in between takes. She’s very, very hands-on!

Cher: “Burlesque is Christina’s movie”

“WELL, LIZ … I’m not really the star. It’s Christina Aguilera’s movie. But, I’m, you know – pivotal. Me and Stanley Tucci are the meat of the thing. But I’m not the star.”

That was Cher, being modest about her role in the hugely anticipated “Burlesque” movie. Cher is always modest.

I managed to scrape this little bit of info from the one-and-only Cher in the most nefarious way. While dining out with Liz Rosenberg, who reps the eternal star, Liz’s cell phone rang. She looked at it and said, “It’s Cher.” And before anybody could say “It’s none of your business,” I plucked the phone from Liz’s hand and said, “Hi, Cher, this is the other big Liz in your life!”

So, we laughed a bit, and she sounds terrific – full of energy. As we spoke of her stellar qualities, I did mention that the poster for “Burlesque” is a dramatic and glam two-shot of Christina and herself. “Do you still insist you are not the star?” I said. She replied, “Well, it’s not like it’s me alone. Christina’s there. Are you trying to make trouble, Hedda?” (Cher knows her Hollywood history. Indeed, she might have even encountered Hedda Hopper during the heady early days of Sonny & Cher.)

Reluctantly, I gave the phone back to Miss Rosenberg, though I extracted a promise from Cher for something “excloosive” soon.

Sometimes, a gal from Texas has to forget her manners to nab a story.

Billy Corgan Mentions Christina in LA Weekly

Your current release strategy is very idiosyncratic. Are you the pioneer of a new system?

It’s organically based in the sense that I’m somewhere between adhering to the rules of the artist heart, which is, “I wanna do what I wanna do when I wanna do it,” and then the marketplace, which is moving very fast and you have to be adaptable. You cannot plan for two years. Look at someone who’s a brilliant and talented person: Christina Aguilera. Two years away, does the big buildup for the record, record comes out, critics pan it, “Oh, it’s like Lady Gaga,” and everything’s blown up for her — overnight. You can’t make that kind of investment as an artist anymore. I think it’s too much, as we say in the business, downside. I can’t ride the Twitter wave, is what I’m saying.
