A Note From Xtina About Lady Gaga

Dear Fans,

I would like to take a moment to clarify something that has been brought to my attention this morning. It is very easy for comments to be taken out of context and create unnecessary drama-especially between us women. So I would like to tell you all directly so my words can not be misconstrued to sell someone else’s story…I have absolutely nothing against Lady Gaga or any other female artist in this business. I think she is great, and I appreciate any woman fearless enough to go against the norm. She has earned her success with hard work and a clear focus and I have nothing but respect for that.
There is room for all of us on everyone’s iPods.

This is not the first time I have been unfairly pitted against another female artist but it will be the last time I comment on the matter.

“Can’t hold us down….”

With love,
C/X

On Akon…
Focus: Akon is a genius with what he does and how he does it, but Christina changed her look way before Gaga existed, i.e. the Stripped LP. Christina is an incredible singer and amazing business woman. She knew the edge would sell and her “Genie in a Bottle” days were numbered. Justin [Timberlake], Britney [Spears] and Christina all changed around the same time and went left with their styles and sounds. Gaga and Christina comparisons are ridiculous because Gaga is a brand new artist and she had to have taken ingredients from the pop icons before her, including Christina.

AC: As someone who has personally worked with Christina Aguilera, do you feel that she is copying Lady Gaga in any way? Furthermore, do you feel that Christina is an insecure person or insecure with herself as an artist in any way?

Focus: Christina follows her heart. She still makes music from that pure place. If it doesn’t evoke an emotion then, ten to one, she won’t do it. I loved working in her environment. It’s all about vibe and feeling. She didn’t care about what was going on in the mainstream, she was just making great music.

AC: Akon also said he hopes Aguilera’s upcoming album Bionic showcases more of her dynamic voice and less of the up-tempo, electro pop bad-girl anthems typified by her latest single “Not Myself Tonight.” You have actually worked with Christina on Bionic and have a track on the album as well. What can you tell us about her upcoming album?

Focus: Every track she showed me was amazing. I will leave it at that.

AC: What is the name of the song you produced on Christina Aguilera’s Bionic album? If possible, can you describe the song?

Focus: It’s called “Sex For Breakfast”. Co-written by Christina and Noel “Detail” Fisher. Christina picked a track of mine she loved and she became the main instrument in it.

AC: People, including her own fans, have often referred to Christina Aguilera as being “stuck up” and “full of herself”. At the risk of compromising your working relationship with her, is there any truth to this statement?

Focus: Hell no! She was incredibly cool to be around and work with. Christina and her husband, Jordan [Bratman] sent me and my family a Christmas card this past X-mas. Would a stuck up, full of herself person care or even pay any mind to something like that? Don’t believe the hype, people!

Billboard Reviews “Not Myself Tonight”

NEW YORK (Billboard) – In the four years since Christina Aguilera released her last studio album, “Back to Basics,” pop ingenues like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Ke$ha have built their careers on bold theatrics, neo-feminist personas and throbbing club beats. Aguilera brings all of that to the table on “Not Myself Tonight,” her lead single from the upcoming “Bionic,” but ups the stakes considerably with her trademark, octave-straddling runs and glory notes. Aguilera channels a more Euro-glamorous version of her former “dirrty” alter-ego Xtina on “Tonight,” dashing lyrics about self-reinvention with breathy chants and naughty expletives. Producer Polow Da Don, who co-wrote “Tonight” with “Drop It Low” singer-songwriter Ester Dean, adds dripping synths, pulsing bass lines and tribal house drums that sound appealingly unfinished. Paired with Aguilera’s unmatched vocal range, “Tonight” proves that the current dance-pop craze would be incomplete without her.

A Special Message From Christina

Dear Fans,

I have been hard at work over the last year or so preparing for this moment. As you know, I have just wrapped production on my first feature film, Burlesque, which will be in theaters this Thanksgiving. And I will finally be releasing my fourth studio album, Bionic, this summer on June 8th. I couldn’t be more excited to finally share this material with you all and I wanted to reach out and let you know what this project is all about for me.

Each album I release is a representation of my personal life experiences and how they have shaped me. I strongly believe that life is all about growth, self-discovery and self-expression. Making music allows me to define my experiences and share them with others who might hopefully relate. Over the past four years I have learned a lot about myself and what I am capable of. What all women are capable of. Since the release of my last studio album, Back to Basics, I have become a mother, a wife, and most recently an actress. All of these new experiences have allowed me to face new challenges and explore different sides of myself I did not even know existed. I am a woman who wears many hats and carries many responsibilities. There are so many characteristics that define me, and this album was put together to represent all of those different parts of myself. The sound is not necessarily easy to define because I am not easy to define. I can be serious. I can be playful. Sexual. Loving. Tough. Hardworking. Honest. To capture all of these characteristics I chose to collaborate with a variety of artists and producers across different musical genres. I was able to explore and create a fresh, sexy feel using both electronic and organic elements with subject matters ranging from playful to introspective. This allowed me to challenge myself by using my voice in ways I never had before. It also allowed me to push personal boundaries and explore what is possible for my future and me as an artist.

New Goldfrapp Interview

Smiling from behind sunglasses the size of small tennis racquets, Alison Goldfrapp, is talking about some of her famous friends. “Christina Aguilera was terribly sweet,” the high priestess of pervy synth pop announces. “She wasn’t guarded at all. Very relaxed. We have met a few lady pop stars and, you know, they can be quite guarded in the way they present themselves.”

Is this a veiled reference to Madonna, who notoriously borrowed — many would say pilfered — Goldfrapp’s pop dominatrix sound and Wickerman chic a few years back? “We met Madonna at the MTV awards. She was very charming,” Alison demurs. “She and Guy Ritchie had previously asked us do do a score for her movie. I don’t think we’re fans of her music, but have a lot of admiration for what she has achieved.”

Surely, though, Goldfrapp was a bit piqued to see Madonna — christened ‘Oldfrapp’ by the press — cribbing her look and musical stylings? “I have to say, there were a couple of occasions where I thought ‘didn’t I just wear that outfit last week or something?’ A couple of things like that. But , you know, I don’t know what Madonna listens to, I don’t know what she does.”

At least they still have a fan in Christina Aguilera. Last year, she contacted Goldfrapp and Gregory out of the blue, inviting them to hang with her in Los Angeles, and toss a few ideas around.

“She flew us out, she looked after us,” says Gregory. “She was very sweet actually. She was with a very new baby. It was hard for her to do any work at all — it was quite against her instincts at the time. But she did, you know.”

One imagines Aguilera enjoying rather a bling lifestyle. “It was very un-corporate really,” says Gregory. “We went in thinking, ‘oh where are all the people?’ It was her and an engineer. All in her little home studio. To be fair, she did have a lot of staff. She had a telephone where she had ‘staff one, staff two, staff three’. She herself was relaxed and open.”

So when can we expect to hear the fruits of their collaboration? Goldfrapp and Gregory glance at one another sheepishly. “We wrote her a song and that was the whole shaboodle really,” says Goldfrapp. “We haven’t heard it and don’t know what’s happening to it. That’s about as far as we can comment. I think she’s figuring out what she’s doing. Whether it will ever see the light of day, we don’t know.”

BIONIC: SPRING

On her fourth LP, Christina Aguilera didn’t want to sound like herself. “I’m not interested in giving it this ‘Christina sound,” she says. “I want to make my voice more relaxed, less soulful.” So Aguilera invited synth-punk trio Le Tigre, Ladytron, singer Sia and M.I.A. producers Hill and Switch, among others, to her L.A. studio, where they cut tunes packed with futurtistic synths and singsong chants. Aguilera got sentimental on “All I Need,” a ballad written for her two-year-old son: “It’s a sweet, sweet song.”
